Maximilian Jacob, web designer in Berlin

Web design that brings you enquiries. Otherwise it is decoration.

By day I look after IT for around 1,300 colleagues across 23 countries. Alongside that I build websites for small businesses in Berlin. No agency in between, you talk to me directly.

THE PROBLEM

Your site makes you look smaller than you are.

Blaffke, a coffee bar in Berlin, came to me with a site that sat with an external administrator. Every change had to go through someone else. Anyone who knows the place knows how good the coffee is. None of that was on the site.

That is the expensive part. Nobody complains. People take one look and they are gone. You do not even find out they were there.

HOW I WORK

You see your site before you decide.

First I ask you who you want to reach and what is going wrong right now. Then I build you a draft you can click through in the browser.

You get the first draft after about a week. Each feedback round after that takes around two weeks, and a normal project about five. If halfway through it stops feeling right, say so and we turn around. I would rather that than have you be polite at the end.

from €599 → a fixed individual quote, no surprises.

What it costs

Two projects so far. Both are live, go and look.

Hospitality · Berlin

Blaffke now sells its own coffee straight from its own site and maintains it itself.

Blaffke is a roastery, and ordering on its own site was not possible.

I moved the whole site over to Shopify instead of bolting a shop onto the old one. What decided it was the upkeep afterwards, because site and shop now sit in one place and the team changes both itself. During the move I cleaned up the slugs and put the points from the SEO audit in place.

Cleaning · Berlin

Cinderella runs in five languages from one source today, and a sixth costs no rebuild.

The old WordPress site had to be maintained separately for each language. Beyond German and English there was no room for more, and the design was years old.

I rebuilt the site with real multi-language support instead of one site per language. What decided it was the next language, the one that did not exist yet, because with duplicated upkeep every further language costs another whole site. On top of that came a new design, Google Tags and SEO.

WHO I AM

I am Max, and I built the two sites above.

Max Jacob, web designer based in Berlin

By day I am a systems administrator and I keep accounts, access and devices running. Anything that repeats every week I automate away, mostly with AI.

Before that I ran finance, HR, legal and IT for a Berlin company while it grew from one site to a city-wide network.

Websites I build evenings and weekends, out of Berlin.

When I am not at the computer I am on the bike, and the longest so far was 380 km in a single day.

What a project costs

Projects from €599

That is the real entry point, not a bait number. What your project costs in the end depends on how many pages it has and how much of the text is still missing. You see a free design draft first, then you get a fixed quote, and until then it costs you nothing.

What a website really costs →

I build for small businesses and solo professionals.

The two sites above are exactly that, a coffee bar and a cleaning company, both from Berlin, both owner-run.

  • Trades, hospitality, cleaning

Your site is years old, loads slowly and is a pain to read on a phone. And that is exactly where your customers look.

A fast, clear site that works on the phone first. So people stick around and call, instead of clicking away.

  • Solo professionals and freelancers

You are good at what you do, but your site looks like an afterthought, and prospects notice that in the first second.

A presence as careful as your actual work, so the first impression works for you.

  • Small businesses stuck in a builder

You are locked into Wix or Jimdo, every change is a fight and the site looks like a thousand others.

Your own maintained site that belongs to you. You decide how it looks, and the code stays with you.

Frequently asked

  • There is a starting price above. What does it cost in the end, and how long does it take?

Beyond that it comes down to scope, because every project is scoped differently. Your fixed quote is set before I start, and it holds. On timing I stay realistic. You usually see the first version after about a week, then each round of feedback adds roughly two weeks. A typical project is done after around five weeks.

  • Is this not just AI slop in the end, like the website builders?

Yes, I work with AI, and that makes a lot of it faster and cheaper for you. The difference is in the decisions made before that. At Blaffke it was moving the whole site rather than bolting a shop onto it, at Cinderella one source instead of one site per language. Both are above and both are live, so you can go and look. A generator does not make those calls for you.

  • What if I do not like the result, and who owns the code?

You see the free design draft before you commit. If the direction is wrong for you, you have lost nothing and you are tied to nothing. If you say yes, everything ends up yours: the code, the content, the domain. You can take all of it to someone else whenever you want.

  • Is the site accessible, and can it be bilingual?

This page is built to BFSG and WCAG-AA, and you can check that rather than take my word for it. Tab through it, or run a checker like axe over it. That same test runs automatically on every deploy here. I build yours the same way, and bilingual German and English comes with it properly, including correct hreflang wiring for search.
